prawn song [24 Aug 2004|05:00pm]
my triumphant return to livejournal!

So anyway, yeah it's been a year and a day since I last updated, and naturally, tons of weirdness has happened. Here's a brief recap:

*Picked up a new (old) bike at WorkingBikes, a 1979 Schwinn Continental road bike, for $20, stripped it down, rebuilt everything on it that rotates, and built it as a fixed-gear bike (one speed, no freewheel, no rear brake...). It's now awesome, and a blast to ride. Who needs brakes? Not me.

*Went to North Carolina (drove down with the parents) and stayed around Asheville. Drove the Blue Ridge Parkway, saw an awesome funk band called Yo Mommas Big Fat Booty Band (www.bootyband.com) at a pub in Knoxville, TN with my mom, and other cool things.

*Came back from vacation, shortly after got dumped by the [former] ladyfriend. THAT was weird... and unexpected. Kind of out of the blue, and I also thought it was weird to end a 5 year relationship without much of an explanation or even a conversation. It was very hurtful at first, but now I'm starting to realize it was probably a good thing this happened, we had probably grown apart in more ways than we realized. Being single is really weird though... I'm hoping I can meet more people, but then again it's not like I'm not keeping busy because...

*I started pharmacy school monday. It's not bad, I have already talked to a few people (and thats saying a lot for me) and the classes will most likely be pretty interesting, if not intense at times. Getting up at 6:30 and having classes start at 8:30 sucks though, I need to start drinking coffee.

*I decided to become vegetarian, which was a gradual process (too many temptations, initially) starting about a week ago, but the last meat I had was saturday night at my friend Phil's pig roast, and I don't plan on having any anytime soon - I'm already stocked up on some basic Morningstar products.

Well, thats about it for now. Seems like a very intense post - lots of stuff. Maybe I should just update less and save it all up? Anyway, I am now going to go and try to read the last 3-4 weeks of my Friends page.

argh [26 Jul 2004|12:35am]
I need to just not talk to her at all. At least for a good amount of time.

This shit is driving me nuts, this fucking "break" thing. We just spent some time on the phone, which initially seemed like a really good idea. I guess it was good for her, I feel like I'm getting an ulcer though. This is retarded. Why do I subject myself to this?

I think I'm going to go punch something.

Blah.

So the ladyfriend and I are "taking a break." She needs to figure some stuff out i guess, about herself and us. Naturally, she has a right to do this, and I could never deny it to her, but its only been 2 weeks and a couple days and I already feel like I'm starting to go nuts.
At first, I figured this would just be a time to get her thoughts together, figure out what she wants to do in life, kiss some other guys, whatever. Now I'm starting to wonder what I got myself into by agreeing to this. A week ago we talked on the phone a little bit, and things sounded nice and promising. Last night we had a 3 minute IM conversation and I ask her how she likes single life and she says "I'm still not sure which I like better, but I'm kinda leaning towards you." OK, granted, she may be leaning towards me, but OMG WTF!?!11 as the kiddies say. Anyway, maybe if this were a real journal I would bitch more about it but I'll spare you all the time and misery.

On the plus side, I increased the distance of my bike rides lately, which is quite gratifying. For the past month or so, I have been doing about 10 miles a day. I skipped last weekend, repacked the ball bearings in my wheel hubs (makes the wheels spin smoother and straighter) on tuesday then rode 20 miles, then yesterday I went for two rides - 18 miles in the afternoon, and then a 6 mile ride late at night to clear my head. Not too shabby! I would like to keep doing longer rides, but I definitely need to get a new saddle. I'm surprised I can sit down.

Anyway, I'm at work, and its almost time to start looking busy... I'll update again soon.

you're all a bunch of judases [02 Jul 2004|03:11pm]
OK, I know its been forever and a day since I updated, and I owe everyone and myself a really good journal entry... but this just isn't it.

In the meantime, I will work on coming up with a new user icon as well, I need a newer pic of me (I think the current one is from wintertime)... since then I shaved the goatee (leaving a soul patch and muttonchops) and as of a couple days ago I have reduced them to somewhat more normal sideburns. I think I will grow the chops back in winter, they're good for keeping my face warm.

I really need to go visit people in Peoria, namely stealthisfroggy, if I can ever figure out where she is living now. Come to think of it, the list of people I owe a visit to is getting quite lengthy.

I'm trying to come up with an idea for a tattoo as well... I'm not sure if I want one, I might just stick to piercings, as they are less permanent, and way cheaper (if not free). Possibly something concerning music, but I would never get anything specific to a certain group or musician. Hmmm...

OK, sorry for the disjointedness of all that.

Well, its been a while. What's new?
As of yesterday, I'm 21. Claire took me out for a pint of Guinness at midnight along with a couple friends. That was cool.

I got a new bass, it's a 5-string fretless, it looks like this:

I started my summer anatomy class at St. Xavier University today, it was OK. It's gonna be pretty intense since its a 5 week course, with 6 exams, 3 "practical" exams (whatever those are, probably in lab) and 6 quizzes jammed in there. The professor is kind of strange, he talks almost entirely through his nose to the point where one can hardly understand what he's saying, and he seems kind of pervy too, but time will tell. Maybe he's just quirky. We met the cadavers today too, their names are Pandora and Quincy.

I just had some Ritz crackers with peanut butter, and I am immensely satisfied.

So I got my tax return today...

$17.00.

Is this a joke? Seventeen dollars? Why bother, big brother?
I got the envelope and I was hoping for a nice chunk of change, maybe put something in the savings or at least go out to a nice dinner, but instead I get $17.

Better than nothing, I suppose.

a ballroom blitz! [25 Apr 2004|06:50pm]
So we had a band practice today and yesterday, for a few hours each time, and my fingertips are practically raw, but we are sounding awesome. So anyway, the performance is May 2nd, 2pm, and I will now post the lineup and final songlist for your reading pleasure.

Vocals - Sherri Doherty
Guitar - Emilio Tostado
Harmonica - Ryan Suzuka
Bass - Ryan Chappell (yours truly)
Drums - Mike Doherty

1. Have A Funky Good Time (James Brown)
2. True Lies (Kenny Wayne Sheppard)
3. Manic Depression (Jimi Hendrix)
4. Pipeline (The Ventures)
5. If Love is a Red Dress (Maria McKee)
6. Shake For Me (Howlin' Wolf)
7. I Can't Quit You Baby (Led Zeppelin)
8. Funky Monks (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
9. Tightrope (Stevie Ray Vaughan)

#5 is just going to be played with vocals, guitar, and harmonica, the rest are the whole band. Before the band goes on, our guitarist is playing a couple spanish songs with his cousin, and possibly doing an acoustic song with the harmonica player, and then there is a band after us who will do their thing for a while.

in a nutshell [21 Apr 2004|12:34am]
Well, I was doing my nightly check on my friends page, and decided it was time for another update. A lot's happened since I last rapped at ya.

For starters, I got accepted into the PharmD program at UIC, which I am extremely excited about. I cannot wait to start, wish I knew some other people going into it though.

Band practices have been going great lately, I'm a bit nervous about the performance though. Last night I ordered new pickups for my bass, which were probably much-needed. The bass is around 25 years old, and a lot of the hardware on it is probably original.

The last few days have been pretty nice. Friday I went out to dinner with Claire and my parents, and ate incredibly well - coconut shrimp as the main course. My mouth is watering just thinking about them again. Saturday I practiced with the band, we just added a harmonica player as well, he is really amazing and adds a lot of flavor to the sound. That night I went to dinner with a couple friends to celebrate a friend's birthday, ate at Chi Tung. Good, as always. My three compatriots attempted to go see Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind after dinner (I had work the next morning, it starts at 11:30pm) but arrived slightly too late to still get tickets. Sunday I worked until 3pm then went bowling, then got schoolwork done the rest of the day. As much as I love procrastinating, accomplishing things feels pretty damn good. Yesterday wasn't bad either, school then work then over to Claire's for her brother Pat's birthday.

Today was strange. Bio lab was boring, the class is almost over so we watched a video on ecological niches during lab. Actually, my lab partner and I played cards while this was going on. Nothing else noteworthy happened in organic chem besides getting a test back, I did better than I expected, which is good. Got home at 10:30, ate some leftover chicken fried rice, and sat down at my trusty laptop.

Eh, thats about it.

greetings impressionable youth! [09 Apr 2004|01:17am]
OK, I am sure you have all been salivating, waiting anxiously for the next update as to the events of my glamorous life, and I apologize for keeping you waiting. The fans deserve better.

So anyway, what is new? I'll sort of work backwards.
I got back from school at about 9:20pm tonight, and after that went to see The Ladykillers with Claire and 3 other peoples. It was pretty good, I thought it was visually pretty good, but some of the magic that was prevalent in the Coen brothers' earlier films was missing from this one. I was entertained, but it wasn't epic or anything I would buy, I'll put it that way.
Earlier today, not much happened.

Yesterday night I had band practice again - oh yeah, I'm in a band, let me tell you about it.
We are called Six Dollar Burger and I play bass (I also just got a new bass amp - exciting) and we are just working on covers for a show on May 2nd (at the BAC for you chicago/beverly folks, few you may be). We have a couple Stevie Ray Vaughan tunes, Hendrix, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, James Brown, King's X, and Red Hot Chili Peppers so far... I'm not 100% sure it's the music I want to be playing in the long run, but I'm having a blast and really expanding my skills by playing with a group like this. It's going to be my first gig.
So practice was good, we finally secured a vocalist [Sherri] who came last night. It was fun.

Earlier yesterday not much happened, some asshole in an SUV almost hit me by blowing a stop sign while I was crossing the street (on foot), I had to jump out of the way. Every day, he gets off the same train as me, and blows the same stop sign. One time, he blew the stop sign after my dad had stopped perpendicular to him and started to go, and almost hit our car, then started yelling at us and shit. Anyway, so yesterday I just gave him the finger right up to his window as he drove by me, he slowed down half a block away, but then kept on going. Fucking ignoramus.

That's about it, I have a ton of work coming up this weekend - biology lab writeup and a huge organic chemistry test both on Tuesday, boo. Still waiting to hear from UIC, I think they are supposed to start notifying April 15th, the wait is pretty nervewracking.

Well, haven't updated in a while, so...
What's new... got contacted by UIC - I was selected for an interview, went for the interview last Monday. It went pretty well, they start notifying about acceptance April 15th so I should know between then and the end of April. Having my fingers crossed is an understatement.
Last night I took a trip out to Crestwood to look for a denim jacket at Kohl's, but they only carry nylon athletic jackets, apparently. Oh well. Then on over to Best Buy to use up a gift card, bought Lost in Translation and American Splendor - two awesome movies. My mom got Go on DVD as well because it was only $6. Cool.

Well, according to the really detailed (and highly recommended) quiz at http://www.votebyissue.org/primary/ ... here's where my issues more or less stand, and which candidates I agree with.

This was a great way to learn about how these everso similar democratic candidates differ in their views, however slight the differences may be at times.

that layer of frost on old ice cream [09 Feb 2004|02:28am]
[ mood | geeky ]

Strange, interesting, semi-eventful weekend.
Friday, after school, went to Guitar Center with John, he ordered a resonator in black, pretty awesome. No one was helping me out whilst I was browsing the basses, so we went a couple blocks over to Sam Ash, where I got to have some fun. I played around on a fretless J-Bass for a while, and I must say I'm in love, I really have to get a freless soon. There's one in particular I'm looking at, which comes in fretted or fretless versions. Naturally, I would go for fretless, as I'm looking to diversify.
Saturday, I didn't do a whole lot. Got a bit done on the latest house portrait, looked around online for info on the camera I got last week. Its a Yashica Kyocera from (I would guess) the 80's, with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, supposed to be good stuff. Picked it up in great condition for $3, just needs a battery. My mom recently sold a house, the previous owner of which recently passed away, leaving no family in this country. The woman who lives across the street is selling everything in the house, so I got a great deal. Today, I went back and bought a Kodak Duaflex II TLR camera which takes very cool pictures. This was also $3. I found 3 places to buy film for it online, one of which (albeit the most expensive place) has a store in downtown Chicago, so I might stop by there after school sometime this week to see what they say about it. I mostly just want to see if they know where I can get the film developed. I'm excited.
Tonight I went sledding again with John, Gerry, and Pat. It was a ton of fun, mos def. Things really spiced up when we noticed the flagpole though (we were at a park) - it had a flag flying on it. It was too tempting, it had to be messed with. So, we (and by we I mean Gerry, our nominated revolutionary... I was busy with my role as the getaway driver) flipped that sucker upside-down! It's pretty visible, I was proud of him. I should have gotten a pic, maybe I will tomorrow morning if its still up.

[ mood | productive ]

Currently working on writing up a biology lab. Its a long and aggravating process. Mental note: biologists should not attempt to do or describe math. The statistics in this lab are so poorly explained it is a joke. What are you saying?! At least its about sex.
God damn its cold out. I should've taken the el to school instead of walking, but thats a whole $1.75 each way. That adds up! Not worth it at all. Well, maybe worth the blisters I got from wearing my combat boots (which I think are never going to break in). Sometimes I want to move to someplace warmer, but I know I could never leave the city behind (that sounds like a song lyric... is it?).
In other news (that doesn't revolve around me), apparently there's this awesome parrot that has a vocabulary of 950 words, and a sense of humor. The article is worth reading.
Gotta try to get to Guitar Center and maybe the local pawn shop to try out a fretless bass. Lately, they've been fascinating me, and I hear they are not too hard to switch to if you can develop the ear and the muscle memory for them (all you violinists keep quiet, hehe). I hear they have great tone and playability too.
OK, enough procrastinating, back to work.

pretty little ice cube, does nothing ever last forever? [21 Jan 2004|02:31am]
[ mood | lonely ]

So yesterday I e-submitted my PharmCAS application (my general pharmacy school application, for those not in the know), and this morning I dropped off my supplemental applications at the UIC Pharmacy building. Now, there's not much left to do but play the waiting game. It's kind of a relief... or is it? I know I should feel much less stressed, it hasn't gone away. Maybe there's just too much other stuff to worry about. Like, everything, for example.
I hope I meet some people at UIC this semester. The LiveJournal community thing was great for a while, and still is a great way to converse with those with similar interests, but it is apparently not a very good substitute for real human interaction.
Sorry, I promise the next post will contain more of my usual wit and snappy prose.

[ mood | tired ]

OK, so I went to Borders the other night, in search of a few graphic novels / comics on which to use my gift card. I did not find the ones I was looking for, but I picked up this one called David Boring by Daniel Clowes. He's the guy who did the Ghost World comic, which was made into a movie. I already got through it, and want to read it again. It seems like it went by too quickly. I really dug the art as well. So I wasted some time last night and today searching around Amazon.com, and built up a "wish list" on there. Its really a great tool, its like fake shopping. After I was done, I was going to link to my wish list page in LiveJournal, but when I searched for my page using my name, three different Ryan Chappell's came up, none of which were me. One was even a Ryan E. Chappell (uncanny!), but it definitely wasn't me. The first thing on their list was a pair of crotchless pantyhose. Josh suggested that maybe it was a bizarro-me. Maybe he's right. If he is, I sure hope bizarro-me is getting some.

Anyway, here's my list:
(hyperlinked for your convenience)

32 Stories: The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics by Adrian Tomine
Blankets: An Illustrated Novel by Craig Thompson
Box Office Poison by Alex Robinson
Breakfast After Noon by Andi Watson, Jamie S. Rich
Cerebus, Volume 1 by Dave Sim
Crumple by Dave Cooper
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson
Dan & Larry: Don't Do That by Dave Cooper
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
Good-Bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson
Lenore: Noogies by Roman Dirge
Sleepwalk: and Other Stories by Adrian Tomine
Summer Blonde by Adrian Tomine

Cryptonomicon is the only one that isn't a graphic novel. I really want to get Cerebus and maybe Blankets, but am looking to get one or two more. If anyone knows anything about any of these comics or can make some recommendations, please let me know! Too bad I'm not on zvi's friends list.
